Seeds
A classic, blocky, and sweet green bell pepper that matures to a vibrant bright red.
Yolo Wonder' is a sturdy, heirloom bell pepper variety known for its thick walls and satisfying, crunchy texture. The dense foliage provides excellent canopy coverage, protecting the developing peppers from sunscald during hot summer months. These large, uniform peppers are excellent for stuffing, slicing into fresh salads, or roasting to enhance their natural sweetness.
Light
Needs full sun, at least 6 to 8 hours a day, for strong plants and good fruit set. In Pakistan's peak summer a light shade cloth over the afternoon hours prevents sunscald on the fruit and blossom drop. Its dense foliage helps shade the thick walled fruits from sunscald.
Water
Water deeply and evenly whenever the top 2 to 3 cm of soil is dry, usually every 2 to 3 days in warm weather and daily for pots in summer. Uneven watering or drought causes blossom and bud drop, so mulch to keep moisture steady.
Humidity
Moderate humidity suits it best. Very humid or very dry air can interfere with pollination and flower set, so water at the base, allow good airflow and avoid heavy overhead watering.
Temperature
Grows well from about 18 to 35 C, with the best fruit set at roughly 21 to 30 C. In 35 C+ heat it keeps growing under shade net, though blossoms may drop until temperatures ease and set resumes afterwards. Sow from January to March for spring fruiting.
Pets and children
The fruit is edible and safe for people. Pepper plants belong to the nightshade family, and the leaves and stems can irritate the stomach of pets if chewed, so keep dogs and cats away from the foliage.
Soil
Warm, well drained soil of moderate fertility, rich in compost, with a pH of about 6.0 to 6.8. Use a mix of garden soil, vermicompost and cocopeat, and a deep pot of at least 30 cm if growing in a container.
Fertilizer
Start with a balanced, lower nitrogen fertiliser such as 5-10-10, as too much nitrogen gives leaves instead of fruit. Side dress or give a liquid feed once fruits begin to set, and every 3 to 4 weeks after that.
