Seeds
A classic culinary herb with aromatic, earthy leaves that thrives in dry conditions.
Thyme is a low-growing, evergreen perennial that produces tiny, highly fragrant leaves packed with savory flavor. It is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it perfect for rock gardens, containers, or border edges. Its earthy, slightly minty flavor is indispensable in the kitchen for seasoning roasted meats, vegetables, and hearty stews.
Light
Needs full sun, at least 6 to 8 hours a day, for the strongest flavour and most compact growth. It copes well with Pakistan's summer sun, though pots standing on hot concrete benefit from a little afternoon shade.
Water
Thyme is drought tolerant once established. Water deeply only when the soil is dry several centimetres down, roughly every 7 to 10 days in warm weather and less in winter, and always let the pot drain completely.
Humidity
Prefers dry to moderate air and dislikes damp, still conditions that encourage fungal problems. In humid Karachi keep it in a sunny, open spot with good airflow and avoid overhead watering.
Temperature
Heat tolerant and at home in Pakistan's climate, growing well from roughly 10 to 38 C. In 35 C+ weather give it light afternoon shade and let the soil dry between waterings. Sow in autumn or early spring, and be patient, as the seed is slow and can take 2 to 4 weeks to germinate.

Soil
Lean, fast draining and slightly alkaline soil is ideal. Mix garden soil with coarse sand or perlite and a little compost, or use a cactus type mix in a terracotta pot, because thyme struggles in heavy, moist ground.
Fertilizer
Thyme grows best in lean soil and needs little feeding. A light application of compost or a balanced fertiliser at half strength once in early spring is plenty, as too much nitrogen reduces flavour.
