Seeds
Early-maturing, incredibly solid, and compact cabbage heads with a satisfying crunch.
True to its name, 'Stonehead' produces very dense, round heads that are remarkably heavy for their compact size. It is a fast-maturing variety that resists splitting, allowing it to hold well in the garden even if harvest is delayed. The crisp, sweet leaves are tightly packed, making this an ideal cabbage for shredding into coleslaw, fermenting into sauerkraut, or tossing into stir-fries.
Light
Needs full sun, at least 6 hours a day, to form dense, heavy heads.
Water
Cabbage needs steady moisture, about 2.5 cm of water a week, with deep, regular watering as the heads form. Uneven watering can cause heads to split. 'Stonehead' resists splitting, which gives a little more leeway if harvest is delayed.
Humidity
Average humidity suits it. Water at soil level and keep plants spaced so air moves between the heads, which helps prevent fungal rots and makes caterpillars easier to spot.
Temperature
Grows well through the cool months at roughly 10 to 30 C. Sow from September to December on the plains, and in 35 C+ weather plants can be held in shade with mulch and steady water, though heads will be smaller and looser.

Pet-safe
Soil
Fertile, well drained soil rich in organic matter, with a pH of about 6.0 to 7.0. Dig in plenty of compost or vermicompost, and transplant seedlings deeply and firmly.
Fertilizer
Cabbage is a heavy feeder. Use a balanced starter fertiliser at transplanting, then side dress with nitrogen once plants are established and again as the heads begin to form.
