Seeds
A striking, heat-tolerant loose-leaf lettuce with deep red, frilly edges.
This improved iceberg variety is highly valued for producing uniform, dense heads that snap with a refreshing crispness. 'Salinas 88 Supreme' is bred for excellent disease resistance and performs reliably across a variety of moderate climates. It provides the perfect structural crunch for sandwiches, wedge salads, and burger toppings, storing exceptionally well after harvest.
Light
Likes bright light, with full sun in the cool months and light afternoon shade as it warms, because strong sun and heat lead to bolting and bitter leaves.
Water
Shallow roots mean the bed should never dry out, so water lightly every 1 to 2 days in warm weather, in the morning and at soil level. Tip burn and bitterness follow dry spells.
Humidity
Comfortable in average humidity. Morning watering lets the leaves dry quickly, and giving each head space helps avoid rot and mildew.
Temperature
Best at about 10 to 28 C, so sow from October to February on the plains. Above 35 C it needs shade net and frequent watering and may still flower or turn bitter. Iceberg is the least heat tolerant lettuce type, so time sowing for the coolest months.
Pets and children
Pet-safe
Soil
Loose, free draining loam rich in organic matter. Add compost or vermicompost to garden soil or a cocopeat blend, and mulch the surface to protect the shallow roots.
Fertilizer
Mix compost into the bed before sowing and add a light balanced liquid feed every 2 to 3 weeks, tapering off as the heads close, since late nitrogen makes soft, floppy leaves.
