Seeds
A stunning, deep red cabbage with dense heads and excellent keeping quality.
Red Jewel' yields brilliant, jewel-toned purple-red heads that add striking color to both the garden and the dinner plate. The round, tightly packed heads are uniform in size and boast a sweet, mildly peppery flavor that deepens when cooked. It stores exceptionally well in root cellars or refrigerators and is perfect for pickling, braising, or slicing raw into colorful salads.
Light
Give it full sun, at least 6 hours a day, so the heads firm up and the purple red colour develops well.
Water
Provide steady moisture of about 2.5 cm a week, watering deeply as the heads form. Consistent watering keeps the heads even in size and helps prevent splitting.
Humidity
Copes with average humidity. Water at soil level and leave space between plants so air moves around the heads, which limits fungal rots and lets you spot caterpillars early.
Temperature
Does best from about 10 to 30 C across Pakistan's cooler months. Sow from September to December so heads mature before the heat, and if it climbs past 35 C, shade net and regular watering keep plants alive, though expect looser heads.
Pets and children
Pet-safe
Soil
Fertile, free draining soil with plenty of organic matter and a pH near 6.0 to 7.0 is ideal. Dig in compost or vermicompost and set seedlings in deeply and firmly.
Fertilizer
A hungry crop. Use a balanced starter feed at transplanting, then side dress with nitrogen once plants establish and again as the heads start to form.
