Seeds
A striking, heat-tolerant loose-leaf lettuce with deep red, frilly edges.
Red Diamond' is bred for exceptional commercial-quality uniformity, producing smooth, globe-shaped red tomatoes free of cracking or blemishes. The vigorous vines offer excellent disease resistance and reliably heavy yields throughout the peak summer season. The firm, meaty flesh and balanced sweet-acid flavor make this the ultimate all-purpose tomato for slicing onto sandwiches, dicing for salads, or canning.
Light
Needs full sun, at least 6 to 8 hours a day, for strong growth and sweet fruit. In Pakistan's hottest months light afternoon shade helps stop flowers dropping and fruit scalding.
Water
Aim for a deep soak every 2 to 3 days in the ground, and daily for containers once temperatures climb. Steady moisture avoids split fruit and blossom end rot, so mulch the soil and water at the base.
Humidity
Normal garden humidity is fine. In muggy spells fungal problems spread quickly, so keep plants tied up off the ground, pruned for airflow and watered only at the roots.
Temperature
Grows well across roughly 15 to 35 C, which covers most of the year on the plains, and sets fruit best in the milder 18 to 32 C stretch. In 35 C+ heat the plants keep growing under shade net and flowers may drop until it eases, so sow from late January to March for spring fruiting and again in late summer for an autumn crop.
Pets and children
Ripe tomatoes are safe for people and the ASPCA lists ripe fruit as non-toxic to pets. The leaves, stems and green fruit contain solanine and tomatine, which are toxic to dogs, cats and horses if eaten in quantity, causing drooling, stomach upset and weakness.
Soil
Prefers fertile, free draining soil that is neutral to mildly acidic. Blend garden soil with vermicompost and a little cocopeat, and give container plants at least 20 litres of room.
Fertilizer
A steady, measured feeding routine works best. Apply a low nitrogen tomato feed at planting, once fruit is forming and again after the first pick, since too much nitrogen means leafy plants with little fruit. Its vigorous vines carry heavy, globe shaped fruit, so stake or cage them early.
