Seeds
A striking, heat-tolerant loose-leaf lettuce with deep red, frilly edges.
This hybrid red cherry variety is an absolute workhorse in the garden, producing massive clusters of bite-sized, crack-resistant fruits on vigorous indeterminate vines. They deliver an intense, concentrated classic tomato flavor that perfectly balances sweetness with a tangy bite. These are the perfect snack-straight-from-the-vine tomatoes, and they hold their shape beautifully when blistered in a hot pan.
Light
Grows best with 6 to 8 hours of direct sun, which builds sugars in the fruit and keeps the plant sturdy. In Pakistan's hottest months light afternoon shade helps stop flowers dropping and fruit scalding.
Water
Tomatoes like regular, deep watering that reaches 30 cm or more into the soil, rather than frequent light sprinkles. Steady moisture avoids split fruit and blossom end rot, so mulch the soil and water at the base.
Humidity
Moderate humidity suits it. In muggy spells fungal problems spread quickly, so keep plants tied up off the ground, pruned for airflow and watered only at the roots.
Temperature
Comfortable across the wide range Pakistan offers, from about 15 up to 35 C, with the heaviest fruit set when days stay between 18 and 32 C. In 35 C+ heat the plants keep growing under shade net and flowers may drop until it eases, so sow from late January to March for spring fruiting and again in late summer for an autumn crop.
Pets and children
The ripe fruit is safe to eat, and the ASPCA considers it non-toxic to dogs and cats. The leaves, stems and green fruit contain solanine and tomatine, which are toxic to dogs, cats and horses if eaten in quantity, causing drooling, stomach upset and weakness.
Soil
Plant in loose, compost rich soil that drains freely. Blend garden soil with vermicompost and a little cocopeat, and give container plants at least 20 litres of room.
Fertilizer
Tomatoes are medium feeders. Apply a low nitrogen tomato feed at planting, once fruit is forming and again after the first pick, since too much nitrogen means leafy plants with little fruit. Indeterminate hybrid vines keep growing, so tie them to a strong stake or trellis as they climb.
