Seeds
A robust and savory herb essential for traditional Mediterranean and Italian dishes.
This sprawling, low-maintenance perennial herb produces aromatic leaves that actually intensify in flavor when dried. Oregano thrives in hot, sunny spots with well-draining soil and requires very little fertilizer to produce a bountiful harvest. It is a staple ingredient for tomato-based sauces, marinades, and grilled dishes, while also acting as a great companion plant.
Light
Needs full sun, 6 to 8 hours a day, for dense growth and the strongest aroma. Light afternoon shade is fine during peak summer heat.
Water
Drought tolerant once established. Water deeply when the top 2 to 3 cm of soil is dry, about once or twice a week for new plants and roughly every 7 to 10 days later, and avoid soggy soil.
Humidity
Copes with humidity as long as drainage is sharp and air moves freely around the plant. In humid Karachi avoid overhead watering and space plants well to prevent powdery mildew.
Temperature
Happy in Pakistan's heat, growing well from roughly 10 to 38 C. Above 35 C give it light afternoon shade and keep the soil on the dry side. Sow in autumn or early spring, as seed germinates in 1 to 2 weeks when kept warm and bright.
Pets and children
Safe to eat for people as a culinary herb. The ASPCA lists oregano as toxic to dogs, cats and horses, as its essential oils irritate the stomach and can cause mild vomiting and diarrhoea if the plant is eaten.
Soil
Lean, well draining soil, ideally with a little grit or sand mixed in. A blend of garden soil, perlite and a small amount of compost suits it, and it does better in terracotta pots than in rich, moist mixes.
Fertilizer
Oregano needs little fertiliser. Mix in a little compost at planting and, if needed, a half strength balanced feed once or twice a season, since heavy nitrogen reduces aroma.
